Morning Blends: Original vs. Matcha vs. Coffee+

These three :rise products are where most people start. They all share the same four functional mushrooms (Lion's Mane, Chaga, Reishi, Cordyceps), but they taste completely different and deliver different caffeine and mushroom amounts. The choice mostly comes down to what you want in your mug each morning.

Key Differences

  • Caffeine: Matcha has 55mg, Coffee+ has 45mg, Original has 35mg. All well below the 90 to 100mg in a regular cup of coffee. The feel is different too. Matcha comes with natural L-theanine from the tea leaves, so the energy is smooth and sustained. Coffee+ adds 125mg of supplemental L-theanine to get the same effect. Original just keeps the caffeine low and lets the mushrooms do the work.
  • Mushroom dose: Matcha wins this category outright at 3,000mg per serving. That is 34% more than Original (2,240mg) and 33% more than Coffee+ (2,250mg). If you care most about getting the highest mushroom intake per cup, Matcha is the obvious pick.
  • Flavor profile: Original tastes like a spiced cacao chai, rich and warming. Matcha tastes like an earthy green tea latte. Coffee+ tastes like coffee because it is coffee. I keep rotating between Original and Matcha. Coffee+ is for the mornings I miss the old ritual.
  • Transition ease: If you are coming straight from regular coffee and nervous about the switch, Coffee+ is the zero-adjustment option. It tastes familiar. Original and Matcha take a few days for your palate to recalibrate, but most people I have talked to end up preferring them within a week.

My Recommendation

Start with Original. It is the product that built MUD\WTR for a reason. The flavor is the most universally liked, the caffeine is the lowest, and it is the easiest to make a habit of. If you are already a matcha person, skip straight to Matcha for the highest mushroom dose. And if you know for a fact you will not drink something that does not taste like coffee, Coffee+ exists specifically for you.

Full Lineup: All 6 Products Side by Side

Here is every MUD\WTR product in one table. Three caffeinated morning blends, one caffeine-free daytime drink, one sleep blend, and one pure mushroom supplement. Scan the numbers, then I will break down the less obvious differences below.

Caffeine-Free Options: Turmeric vs. Rest

Two products, zero caffeine, but do not confuse them. They are built for completely different times of day and different purposes. I have seen people buy Rest thinking it is a morning coffee replacement. It is not. Here is the breakdown.

:balance Turmeric

Anytime caffeine-free drink

  • Caffeine: 0mg
  • Mushrooms: 1,840mg (Lion's Mane, Chaga, Reishi, Cordyceps)
  • Flavor: Golden latte with turmeric, ginger, cinnamon
  • Best for: Afternoon use, anti-inflammatory support, caffeine-free lifestyle
  • Key extras: Turmeric + black pepper for curcumin absorption, lucuma, baobab, rooibos

VS

:rest

Evening sleep blend

  • Caffeine: 0mg
  • Mushrooms: 1,200mg+ (Turkey Tail, Reishi)
  • Flavor: Warm rooibos chai with herbal notes
  • Best for: 1-2 hours before bed, sleep support, wind-down ritual
  • Key extras: Valerian root, passionflower, ashwagandha, chamomile (no melatonin)

The quick version: Turmeric is your daytime option. Drink it any time you want something warm and nourishing without caffeine. The anti-inflammatory benefits from turmeric plus curcumin are real, and it tastes like a golden latte you would pay $7 for at a cafe. Rest is exclusively for evenings, an hour or two before bed. The valerian and passionflower will relax you, and that is the whole point. Drinking Rest at noon is a waste. Drinking Turmeric before bed will not help you sleep. I use both: Turmeric around 2pm on caffeine-free days, Rest around 9pm most nights.

Mushroom Boost: The Wildcard

Boost does not fit into a neat category because it is not really a drink. It is a flavorless mushroom powder you dump into whatever you are already drinking. That sounds boring on paper, but it might be the smartest product in the lineup. Here is why.

8 Mushroom species (vs. 2-4 in drinks)
3,000mg Per serving (tied with Matcha for highest)
90 Servings per container (vs. 30 in drinks)
0 Flavor impact (completely tasteless)

If you already love your morning coffee (or tea, or smoothie) and just want the mushroom benefits without changing your routine, Boost is the answer. You get eight species including King Trumpet, Shiitake, and Maitake that are not in any of the drink blends. And at 90 servings per container versus 30 in the drinks, it is the best per-serving value by far.

I add Boost to my :rise Original most mornings. That puts me over 5,000mg of mushrooms before 8am. It sounds excessive until you remember the clinical studies used doses in that range. You genuinely cannot taste it in the drink.

Daily mushroom intake: ~2,240mg

The All-Day Stack

Morning energy + afternoon calm

  1. Morning: :rise Matcha
  2. Afternoon: :balance Turmeric
